I Wrote Lyrics For A Persona 5-Themed Parody of a Phineas and Ferb Song

A phantom thief?

JOKER the Phantom Thief?!

Back in March, I created a blog for song lyrics I made up. Until a little earlier this month, the only lyrics on that blog were for an original song I made up for a story I still haven't fully written. At some point, I remembered something that I knew I could put up on the blog.

You see, back when I was playing Persona 5 (the vanilla one; I still need to finish Royal at some point), there's a little something I'd do while exploring Mementos. For some reason, I would sing the "doo-bee-doo-bee-doo-ba"s from the Perry the Platypus theme from "Phineas and Ferb", a show I used to love as a child; I'd even time it so that the Morgana-mobile, as I like to call it, would hit Shadows right when I got to the "ba". I have no idea why I did it; I just did. I was randomly thinking about this at work one day back in October of 2023, and then, inspiration hit me.

I should write Persona 5-themed lyrics for a parody of the Perry the Platypus theme.

First of all, when writing those lyrics, I focused on parodying the short version of the song; I was already struggling to come up with lyrics for that version, so I didn't think that I would be able to write my way through parody lyrics of the extended version on the Across the 2nd Dimension soundtrack. Second, I knew that I wanted to specifically focus on the player character, Ren Amamiya/Akira Kurusu, a.k.a. Joker. Obviously, the name of the parody would be "Joker the Phantom Thief"; it was perfect, since the amount of syllables was the same as "Perry the Platypus"!

I probably should have been working at that moment, but while still at work, I wrote down a part of the lyrics on a Sticky-Note and kept it aside for when I could go home and write the rest. You would think that that part would be the beginning of the song, but actually, it was this part:

Yeah, this was the first part of the song that was written - the part that mentions his grappling hook (which he only had in Persona 5 Royal, by the way) and the gun he uses, which replaces the part of the Perry the Platypus song that talks about Perry's beaver tail and bill. Well, the part of Perry the Teenage Girl - another Phineas and Ferb that is itself another parody of Perry the Platypus - that replaces that part is about "Perry" listening to MP3 songs on "her" phone, so I don't see anything wrong with it! (Important note: I'm really not questioning that lyric choice. I'm just saying.)

When I got home, I wrote the rest of the lyrics. The trickiest part of the process was building off of what I had previously written; in other words, I needed to figure out a line to go before the one I had originally come up with, with the new line ending with a word that rhymes with "gun". In the end, I ended up coming up with "Need a Trickster? 'Cause he's one". I know, not the best line I could have written, but I hadn't brought up his status as a "Trickster" at all in the lyrics, so I just put it there.

Speaking of which, if I ever get the inspiration to write parody lyrics for the extended version, I would like to namedrop some of the Personas you can use. I may have written "He's got multiple Personas in his mask to help save the day", but I never mentioned any specific Personas. I especially want to namedrop Arsene, since he's the protagonist's initial Persona and is also used by Joker in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Maybe I could somehow squeeze in a certain other Persona that you get at the end of the vanilla Persona 5.... Nah, too spoiler-y, even for a game that came out more than seven years ago.

Anyway, I'm at least somewhat proud of the lyrics I wrote. Unfortunately, I don't know if these parody lyrics will ever be used; my voice is too high-pitched to make my singing voice work for it (believe me, I tried), and I can't really justify getting someone else to sing it for me. Who knows, though? Maybe there will inexplicably be a Phineas and Ferb and Persona 5 crossover at some point, and if I get really lucky, I can e-mail either Dan Povenmire, Jeff "Swampy" Marsh, anyone else on the Phineas and Ferb crew, or anyone at Atlus to get them to use my lyrics! Jokes aside, if anyone has a suitable voice and wants to sing the parody, I'm okay with it as long as I'm credited for them; you can click here to see the lyrics for yourself. Oh, and make sure you credit the original creators of both Phineas and Ferb and Persona 5, too; everyone involved in both of them deserve to get recognized for their hard work!
